Why Police Squad rocks, in 10 sentences

Frank Drebin: I’m a manager. I wanna take over Buddy Brigg’s contract.

Cooper: What are you, some kind of a wise guy?

Frank Drebin: Yeah, I’m a wise guy. With a lot of long green.

Poker player: You manage Lorne Greene?

Frank Drebin: No, I mean I got cash.

Poker player: You manage Johnny Cash, too?

Cooper: Wait a minute. Who are you?

Frank Drebin: Kelly. Bob Kelly. Mind if I sit in a few hands?

Cooper: Your money’s good here.

Poker player: Goodyear? You got the blimp, too?

Alas Smith & Jones: A plea

juli 12, 2010

In late 2007, I wrote this blog entry (in Danish), asking why the British television comedy series Alas Smith & Jones has not yet been released in a complete version on DVD – or indeed on VHS – but only in the form of a number of compilation tapes. The entry resulted in several comments from Danish readers who would also like to see this series released in its full version – and even in one phone call. A year after, I asked again – and once again received comments from other fans.

What has happened since? The answer, sadly, is nothing. Or very close to nothing. Another compilation – this time on DVD – has seen the light of day, and just to get everyone’s hopes up, the distributors named it At Last Smith & Jones – signalling that years of waiting was about to come to an end as fans would finally be getting what they had been hoping for. But alas, At Last was not the “at last” we wanted, although it is the longest S&J compilation yet to be released.

I feel it is time to put forward the request once again – and this time in English. Dear people at BBC, TalkBack Productions, Fremantle – or whomever it is that holds the rights to this particular bit of comedy legend. We appreciate the compilations in the sense that selected sketches are of course better than no sketches at all. But we really don’t want other people, however competent they may be, to judge for us which S&J sketches are good enough to be viewed and which aren’t. We love the show, and we want all of it.

Tremendous amounts of crap are being released on DVD in shiny deluxe box-sets even as I am writing this – DVD’s that no one will care about in a very short while. But Alas Smith & Jones is appreciated by countless fans worldwide – and no one can deny that this show has been among the most influential, along with Monty Python, in British television comedy history. So please, let’s have the full, complete and 100% uncut version of this classic comedy show – the real “at last” Smith & Jones. The fans need it – and Smith & Jones deserve it.

Hamlet 2

marts 18, 2010

I’m a diehard Steve Coogan fan – and I’m willing to watch just about anything as long as Coogan’s in it. I start drooling when I think of the upcoming “Alan Partridge: The Movie“. This being said, I think that Coogan has so far been funnier in his various tv shows than in his movies – with the very amusing “Tristram Shandy” interpretation “A Cock and Bull Story” as an exception – and last night’s movie, “Hamlet 2″, didn’t really change this impression. It was funny, but you know it could have been funnier – if it had been less movie-like and more in the loose format of Coogan’s television shows. I did, however, enjoy “Rock Me Sexy Jesus”, the hit song from the musical sequel to “Hamlet” (starring Jesus) that Coogan’s character stages in the film – and which contains cryptical references to Jesus’ “swimmer’s body”. Also, Elisabeth “Cocktail” Shue is great in a small role, starring as herself. She is the one heard laughing in the audience early in the video.

More from American tv-series “Flight of the Conchords”: Brett and Jermaine perform a cheer-up song for band manager Murray, my favourite character in the show:

Flight of the Conchords, 1

Today’s comedy bit: “Flight of the Conchords“, a funny American tv series about Brett and Jermaine – two musicians from New Zealand – and their attempts to become famous in New York under the guidance of their band manager Murray. It took me a little while to learn to appreciate this series – and its music – but slowly it made a fan out of me. Here are Brett and Jermaine trying to rap their way out of being mugged:

My rhymes are so potent that in this small segment
I made all of the ladies in the area pregnant
Yes, sometimes my lyrics are sexist
But you lovely bitches and hoes should know I’m trying to correct this

Other rappers dis me
Say my rhymes are sissy.
Why? Why? Why?
What?
Why exactly?
What? Why?
Be more constructive with your feedback, please. Why?
Why?

“I was just thinking how goddamn much I love justice”

Jeg ser sjældent tv-serier – og så godt som aldrig danske dramaserier, fordi jeg har lidt svært ved at forlige mig med patosen.

Men hvis jeg så dem – dvs. serierne – så ville jeg først og fremmest se SPEEDO:
